About the Cats Back:
Some years ago, just before the landlord went on holiday, the pub cat disappeared, causing much concern among the regulars. A month later, after mine host’s return, in strolled the wayward feline, prompting him to write a notice reading, somewhat prosaically, “The cat’s back”. Much relief all round. Built in 1865 for lightermen on the Thames and Wandle, this vestige of a once-busy riverside stands defiant among blocks of new apartments. Its eccentricity is exemplified by an old globe-topped petrol pump on the pavement, dodgy Victorian photographs, a Calypso fruit machine (one old penny a go), Barbie dolls in glass cases and more. The bar offers a wide range of tempting food including lamb stew; Cumberland sausages and mash; cheese ravioli; spaghetti Bolognese; beef Stroganoff; and vegetarian spring rolls. Food is also served in the ornate first-floor dining room. Live music, from jazz to West African, can break out spontaneously.
